Virtual Research Environment FAQ

Getting started

Who is eligible to apply? Anyone working or researching in the field of Heritage and Conservation Science is eligible to apply to use the VRE. For a definition please see the RICHeS website.

How long does the application process take? You will receive a response from the HSDS within 5 working days of receiving your completed application.

Projects and users

Can my project just be me? Yes. A project can be a single user working independently.

Can my project just be a general account for my research interests? Yes. Your project can cover any area of research — it does not need to be tied to a specific funded project or collaboration.

Can I add users to my project at a later date? Yes. Project Investigators (PIs) can add members to their project at any time, including inviting new users to join the platform.

Can I have multiple projects and/or be part of multiple projects? Yes, but each project will need to be applied for separately.

Access

Can I access the VRE from outside the UK? Yes. As the HSDS is a DIGILAB within ERIHS, access is available to users outside of the UK.

Day-to-day use

How long will sessions be kept open for? Sessions in a virtual desktop remain open as long as required. You will be asked to end your session if you are no longer actively processing or working on the virtual desktop.

Can I request new software?

Yes, subject to agreement with the HSDS Virtual Desktop Managers.

Is there a limit on the amount of storage I can use?

No. There is currently no limit on storage within your project.

Project lifetime and files

How long do projects stay active for?

Projects remain active between the start and end dates agreed during the application and onboarding process. The end date can be extended by agreement with the HSDS Virtual Desktop Managers.

What happens to my files when a project ends?

Files remain editable throughout the active project period. After the project end date, files are kept available to download for three months, after which they will be removed.

Support

What happens if I need help or encounter a technical issue?
