Alternative secure data repositories
The HSDS recognises that there are other trusted digital repositories relevant to the heritage science and conservation research community. Where such repositories exist, the HSDS will not duplicate existing provision and will work with the community to ensure FAIR data. The following list provides guidance on repositories relevant to specific research domains, though it is not exhaustive.
If you wish to propose additional trusted digital repositories for inclusion, please contact the Collections Development Manager ([email protected]).
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is the UK’s premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge to help society to use its natural resources responsibly, manage environmental change and be resilient to environmental hazards. HSCR datasets that could be deposited with the BGS may include marine borehole data, as well as seabed and sub-seabed geological and geophysical data and geological maps.
The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility in the UK for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment. HSCR datasets that could be deposited with the BODC may include large scale marine surveys and terrain models of the ocean floor. Surveys of wreck sites or submerged human occupation sites fall within the HSDS Collections Policy.
The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) provides a comprehensive record of the world’s nucleotide sequencing information, covering raw sequencing data, sequence assembly information and functional annotation.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is the national archive for some types of HSCR data derived from analyses of material from archaeological sites and buildings in Scotland. For further details please contact the Collections Development Manager ([email protected]).
Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is the national archive for data relating to sites and buildings in Wales, including maritime heritage in Welsh coastal waters. For further details please contact the Collections Development Manager ([email protected]).
The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is a world-leading centre for hydrography, delivering data and expertise to support safe, secure and thriving oceans. HSCR datasets that could be deposited with UKHO may include navigational and hydrographic records relating to maritime heritage.
