Research Complex at Harwell

Research Complex at Harwell is a multidisciplinary laboratory offering state-of-the-art equipment in physical and life sciences. They provide a collaborative setting for both short and long-term users, with access to large-scale facilities across the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Diamond Light Source, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Central Laser Facility and the Rosalind Franklin Institute.

Research Complex is home to three user facilities for the Central Laser Facility: ULTRA, OCTOPUS, and ARTEMIS. They offer a suite of advanced capabilities for microscopy and spectroscopy, including non-invasive characterisation and imaging applications for heritage samples. A case study detailing the use of Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy for heritage science can be found on the STFC website

In addition to hosting facilities such as CLF and HarwellXPS with their own user programmes, Research Complex has a range of shared equipment and expert support staff across physical and life sciences, these include:

  • Crystallisation Facility
  • Biophysical Instruments Facility
  • Electron Microscopy (including Cryo-EM, SEM)
  • Cell Culture and Microbiology

All ad-hoc access requests must be supported by an existing user. Requests for long-term access are welcomed from any research group holding a research grant from one of the following stakeholders: MRC, EPSRC, STFC, BBSRC.
